A young, unmarried woman carrying a secret that could destroy her breaks into song. Mary’s Magnificat is praise, and it reads like a manifesto: “He has brought down princes from their thrones and exalted the humble,” she sings. “He has filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away with empty hands.”

This Sunday we continue Honest to God with the prayer of an unmarried, pregnant teenager who became, in Luke’s account, the first person to proclaim the gospel.
